Maddie’s entrance into this world was one of the smoothest I’ve ever seen! I got to the hospital at 9am, but 10:20 she was pushing and by 10:44 miss Madeleine Mae was born! 8lbs, 19″ of pure joy born on her actual due date! Emily actually checked into the hospital around 10pm the night before and got her epidural around 12:30am. She labored relatively comfortably all night long and was ready to push by morningMy favorite part of this birth was Emily & Jacob’s reactions as soon as she came out. Both were overtaken with tears of joy and it was so touching to witness.
Unfortunately mama & daddy did not get to spend much time with Maddie before she was taken to the NICU. The doctors determined pretty quickly that she inhaled amniotic fluid during the delivery, and that required a trip to the NICU for a chest x-ray and blood work. It was so hard to watch as they took her away and I felt so bad for Emily & Jacob. They were originally told that Maddie would be in there for a minimum of 2 hours, but it turned out that she needed to be on antibiotics and oxygen and be monitored in the NICU for 48 hours, which meant she wouldn’t be in their room as they had obviously imagined. Thankfully Emily & Jacob were able to stay on campus at the Ronald McDonald house after Emily was discharged so she could continue to breastfeed & be with Maddie. After a couple of days, Maddie was well enough to be discharged and everyone was able to go home after spending 4 long days at the hospital. Praise God!
Emily & Jacob are good friends of mine from college and we all lost touch for several years after we graduated. Thanks to good old facebook, we reunited during Emily’s pregnancy and I was honored that they asked me to be at their birthI am so happy for you guys and looking forward to seeing you again today for Maddie’s newborn session! Due to the circumstances, I was not allowed in the NICU to take any pictures of Maddie, so you will see a few of Emily’s pictures at the end of the show to help complete the story. Enjoy!
